I have been using AVG , Spybot , and Ad-Aware for the past few years to keep my systems safe. A new addition to the programs I use is Malwarebytes. Recommendations are to use at least one Antivirus program and two Spyware programs.
If you are unable to update the virus definitions through the AVG program itself, you can download the update and then choose TOOLS and UPDATE FROM DIRECTORY.
The firewall I use with Windows XP is Sygate. Unfortunately this program is not compatible with Vista. I have not yet decided on a firewall to use with Vista.
